What dog grooming equipment is needed?

Every dog needs some sort of a grooming routine. Lots need a daily brush whilst others need regular haircuts. At the very least, every dog needs a bath and nail trim occasionally. Physical care, like maintenance of their coat and nails, is considered one of your dogs basic needs.

Grooming supplies are essential to keep up with your dog's grooming needs. When deciding on general supplies for your dog, you must remember the grooming equipment. Here we will discuss some of the basics so you can make the best choice on grooming supplies and equipment for your four-legged friend.

Dog brushes and combs. As there are so many different breeds of dog it will come at no surprise that there are many different types of brushes available. You need to choose a brush or comb that best suits your dog's hair. They may also benefit from more than just one style of brush or comb.

  • Bristle brushes. These work great for most different types of hair. Bristle types come in a variety from soft to firm and from short to long. As a rule, a short and soft bristle brush works best for dogs with short and fine hair. Where a long and firm bristle brush works best for dogs with thick and coarse hair.

  • Wire pin brushes. These are best for dogs that have medium to long hair as they can get between the strands.

  • Rakes and mat breakers. These are used to break up tangles and mats in more severe cases on medium to long-haired dogs.

  • Flea Combs. This brush is utilised to detect and remove fleas but this tool can’t eliminate a flea infestation.

  • Curry brushes or combs. These are for the use of removing debris and dirt and it can also be used before brushing. The short rubber tips stimulate the natural oils in the skin. Some dogs who have really short hair may only need the occasional use of a curry brush or comb.

Dog shampoos. When you use the right shampoo, bathing your dog becomes so much more effective. It’s best to avoid overly scented or coloured formulas and always choose a soap-free shampoo that is specifically designed for dogs.

  • Tear-free shampoo. This aids in the protection of your dog's eyes during baths.

  • Natural shampoo. This is a chemical-free shampoo that often has herbs in it to improve skin and coat.

  • Medicated shampoo. These can be prescribed by a vet for dogs with allergies or other skin conditions.

  • Conditioners. These are after you have shampooed your dog to keep its coat moisturised, shiny and tangle-free.

Dog ear care. This is an area of your dog's maintenance that is often overlooked. Regular ear cleaning can remove the build-up of wax, dirt and debris which will prevent ear infections.

  • Ear cleansers. These are used to rinse and clean the ear canal. Choose a product that is designed for dogs and recommended by your vet.

  • Cotton balls or pads. These can be used to wipe out debris from the ears after the cleanser has been applied. Never use cotton-tipped swabs in your dog's ear.

  • Ear medications. Veterinarians can prescribe these for dogs with ear infections, conditions or mites.

Dog hair clippers. These are mainly used on dogs who have hair that keeps growing such as Poodles or Shih Tzus because they need to be groomed regularly. Lots of owners will have their hair cut short whilst some choose to keep it a little longer which will require them being more frequently brushed. Some medium-sized dogs can benefit from an occasional trim but they should never be fully shaved down. Experienced groomers may also use scissors to neatly trim or touch up long hair but if you are not trained then we advise you to stick with clippers.

Nail trimmers. This can be a stressful time for both dogs and their owners. It is important to know the correct techniques and use of tools. If you cut down too far then you can cause pain to your dog. For this reason, we advise seeing a professional dog groomers in Swansea. For any more questions on this, please call us and we would be happy to discuss the process in further detail.
